Keith Gast is the head coach of both the Girls’ and Boys’ Varsity Swim and Dive teams. He is in his 5th year of coaching at Brownsburg, along with teaching social studies at BHS. Keith has been coaching for 26 years, including at Cascade High School, Tri-West High School, Roncalli High School and Jeffersonville High School. He has led the Aquadogs to 4 sectional championships and 1 county championship in his 5 years at Brownsburg. At Jeffersonville High School, he led the girls’ team to 3 sectional titles and the boys’ team to 8 sectional titles, along with two top ten boys’ teams and coached 7 athletes to individual state titles.
Overall, he has led his various girls’ and boys’ teams combined to 16 conference championships and 11 sectional titles. As a head coach, he has an overall record for girls’ teams of 246-66 win/loss with a 32-16 win/loss record at Brownsburg. For boys’ teams, he has an overall record 296-48 win/loss record and a 28-18 win/loss record at Brownsburg. Keith has coached 2 girls and 5 boys to Indiana All-Stars, All-conference or All-state titles. He has coached 25 athletes that went on to play in college, including NCAA Champion Ben Hesen. Hensen held an American Record in 2008 and was on the professional swimming program for 5 years.
Keith was a swimmer at both Ben Davis and Avon high schools and went on to swim in college at Butler University. He was a school record holder at Avon and Ben Davis, a Hendricks county champion in 1985 and 1986 in the 400 Free Relay, 200 IM and the 500 Free. He also was a conference finalist as a freshman at Butler and was All-Conference in the 200 Breast and 800 Free Relay.
When he is not coaching or teaching, he is playing disc golf, going to the movies with his wife or playing “nerd games.” His wife, Melissa, is the Swim/Dive head coach at Cardinal Ritter High School. He has 8 children, including Kea, an English teacher at New Albany High School; Kevin, a junior swimmer at Franklin College; Kyle, a senior at Jeffersonville High School; Oksana, a senior at Jeffersonville High School; Max, a junior at Jeffersonville High School; Olivia, a junior at Cardinal Ritter High School; Abby, a sophomore at Brownsburg High School and Nastia, an 8th Grader at River Valley Middle School. He also has a granddaughter named Harper who is in kindergarten. He also has 2 dogs, a 9 year-old mutt named Wally and a 2-year old English Bulldog named Margaret (Maggie) Thatcher.
